111 Superconductive High-Tech Dipole Magnets for Research Project FAIR

Babcock Noell has get an order from the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) for manufacture and delivery of 111 superconducting SIS 100 dipole magnets for the research facility FAIR in Darmstadt. A production line for manufacturing the superconducting cable and magnets covered by this order will be set up in Wuerzburg.

With a volume of more than a billion euros, FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) represents one of the largest research projects worldwide. The accelerator facility will enable a variety of experiments for physicists from all over the world to gain insights into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe. The SIS100 accelerator system, the facility’s centerpiece and “workhorse” will be serving as pre-accelerator for all these experiments.

This requires magnets with superconducting field coils whose magnetic field can be modified rapidly during continuous operation. The superconductivity enables creating the high fields of 1.9 Tesla (40,000 times earth magnetic field) at minimal operating costs. This kind of combination of superconductivity and rapidly changing magnetic field is unique. The 111 dipoles have a length of 3 meters and a weight of nearly 2 tons each.

Prior to the order, Babcock Noell successfully developed a prototype which was then thoroughly tested by the GSI.
