Trim Coils for ASDEX

To mitigate MHD instabilities such as Edge Localized Modes (ELMs), the ASDEX upgrade experiment was equipped with 16 three dimensionally shaped trim coils.

The winding pack was insulated and embedded in a case made of thin Inconel sheets. Impregnation for insulation and embedding was performed in a one step process.

Since the coils are placed inside the plasma vessel, the coils have to be tested against UHV.

Special manufacturing processes have been qualified for the fabrication of these coils – e.g. punch-drawing, 3D laser cutting and laser welding of the Inconel casing.
