Structural Health Monitoring

Current Issues

Excitement increases towards the cold season of the year! Acoustic emission testing on bridges

Bilfinger Noell is taking over the monitoring of statically fragile supporting structures of the Thalaubach Bridge on the A7 near Eichenzell-Döllbach. The installation of the Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) continuous monitoring enables early detection and precise location of incipient damage mechanisms under demanding environmental conditions.

Technical article in the magazine Bautechnik 03/2022 "Monitoring of the bridge at the Altstädter Bahnhof"
In December 2019, the overpassed federal highway and tram were closed to traffic. The reason for the closure was incipient cracking in the longitudinal girder webs in conjunction with hollow swells that were ultimately attributed to cracked prestressing wires. In order to prevent a closure of the highly frequented traffic routes underneath, an extensive monitoring concept was required.

Our performances:

Software-based condition monitoring which is mainly based on the AET:

  • Integral long-term monitoring of complex components / structures
  • Monitoring of selected hot spots
  • Ad-hoc condition diagnosis
  • Trouble Shooting
  • Creation of testing concepts

Our service:

  • Creation of individual monitoring concepts
  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of measurement technology
  • Digital data evaluation and interpretation of results
  • Integrated alarm function for mobile devices in case of events
  • 24/7 access to customer portal for current status reports

Popular areas of application of our customers

  • AET continuous monitoring of complex geometric structures such as bridges, supporting, structures, cranes and building structures
  • Detection of cracks in building structures, supporting structures, cranes, pipelines, containers, fittings, tanks
  • Safety-related monitoring during pressure testing of sensitive components, under high risk potential (gas pressure testing) or within the scope of recurring tests

Appropriate materials for the process:

  • Almost any material is suitable for the AET:
Steel, concrete, wood, glass, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP)

Our staff:

Bilfinger Noell works exclusively with its own skilled staff and employees who have completed an additional training (at least AET-level 2) supervise the projects. On request, our engineers will create structural analyses, fatigue analyses, service life calculations or time history calculations.
